Out of Doors is an original suite composed by Bruno Heinen, synthesizing varied influences from the worlds of contemporary classical and improvised music. The primary inspiration for this work came from Bela Bartók’s composition 8 Improvisations Op.20 written in 1920, which was based on simple folk melodies. The suite is not a reworking, but rather an original composition. As well as the Bartók, influences for the work include Duke Ellington, Alice Coltrane, Chick Corea, György Ligeti and Maurice Ravel. The title ‘Out of Doors’ represents the synthesis of these varied influences in a work that defies specific categorization. This performance is part of a 16 date UK tour.

Currently professor of jazz piano and composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, Bruno Heinen is a London based improvising pianist, composer and educator. He has been described by the Guardian as eclectic, eccentric, and unobtrusively erudite. In 2009 he was nominated for the Paul Hamlyn Composers Award, and he has recently completed an AHRC-funded practice-based PhD at the RNCM with the title ‘Counterpoint in jazz piano with specific relation to the solo work of Fred Hersch’. He has performed in venues and festivals worldwide, and recently held the piano chair for two recorded performances of Bernstein’s ‘Wonderful Town’ at the Barbican Centre with the LSO conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

Double bass player and composer Andrea Di Biase studied classical double bass at Conservatory of Milan and has played with world class jazz musicians including Stan Sultzman, Norma Winstone, Pete Saberton and Asaf Sirkis.

Together with pianist Liam Noble, Andrea held the bass chair in the last trio of the legendary trumpet player and composer Kenny Wheeler.

Currently residing in the UK, New York musician Gene Calderazzo has established himself as one of the busiest drummers on the international jazz scene. Notable performances have included Steve Lacy, Pharoah Sanders, Steve Grossman, Eddie Henderson, The NDR, Mike Gibbs, Bheki Mseleku, UMO, Sting, Radiohead, James Moody, Phil Woods, Benny Golson, Ulf Wakenius, Gary Husband, Wayne Krantz, Bobby Watson and Eddie Gomez among others.
