A standard piano has 88 keys. Piano Day is an annual worldwide event which celebrates this wonderful musical instrument and takes place on the 88th day of the year. In 2020 it falls on Saturday 28th March. Local pianist and award-winning composer Steve Luck brings the next edition of his Great Northern Piano Sessions back to the Civic Theatre and as ever, he will be featuring a top quality line up drawn from the growing contemporary classical scene. All three featured composers make music which is rooted in a sense of place.
Ben Crosland credits the beautiful countryside surrounding his hometown of Worcester as the primary inspiration behind his debut album “Songs from Rainbow Hill”. Strong melodic lines and a convincing sense of narrative define this unique, yet highly approachable voice for solo piano.
Drawing on influences from Nils Frahm and Erik Satie, as well as field recordings from his travels across North America and Europe, Vancouver-based pianist/composer Nathan Shubert’s engaged, empathic take on contemporary classical blends muted physicality with an exceptional ear for beauty.
Local composer and founder of the Atmospherica Concert series Steve Luck completes the line up and will perform a selection of pieces which are influenced by his Tyneside and Northumbrian roots.
