Newcastle rappers Kema Kay and Kay Greyson have been working with the cream of Tyneside's hip hop and grime artists over the course of the past year. Tonight's very special live streamed concert will feature performances from Kema and Kay alongside sets from the finest emerging talent the region has to offer. 

Kema is known by many as "China" in the Ken Loach' BAFTA winnning film, "I Daniel Blake" he has also starred in his own one man play, "Shine" at Live Theatre. Here tonight Kema will be promoting his latest EP the stunning "Not Anymore" which takes the listener through Kema's life from overcoming racism and adversity, growing up in the West End of Newcastle to establishing himself as one of the hottest properties on the north east's hip hop scene. 

Kay Greyson is an north east artist on the cusp of breaking out nationally. Her recent single on Soul Kitchen Recordings "Out of Time" combines astute lyrics with cutting edge music it comes hot on the heels on her "Paris" EP which garnered play on Amazing Radio and BBC. It is as a live performer that Kay really comes into her own. One of the few artists who can hold an audience in the palm of their hand, on her own or in partnership with Kema she is a force of nature, dynamic and exciting, recently released from show-stifled lockdown this promises to be a performance not to be missed. 

Kema and Kay have been working with some of the regions hottest young dancers who will be bringing their moves to the show to vibe up audience and artists alike and bring a "Soul Train" vibe to proceedings. Adding to the vibe will be local stage dresser extraordinaire Yve Ngoo will be creating a set based around a 1970's front room complete with a Blue Spot Radiogram playing '45s with its own built in cocktail cabinet. 

If this was not enough Kema and Kay will be showcasing some of the north east's finest young hip hop and grime artists. As Kay puts it, "Tune in and watch the future". 

Throughout this month artist Rob Rez has exhibited his paintings of Kema, Kay and young performers from the hip hop scene at Gosforth Civic Theatre. Rob will be undertaking a live painting of proceedings capturing the spirit of the show live and direct.

Plus very special guests Ladies of Midnight Blue, and introducing The Thrilling Three Eliannah Etania and Isaiah . The night will also feature some of the north-east’s hottest young dancers Mimi, Igor, Marshall and Blessing. Northern Roots gratefully acknowledges the funding of Youth Music, Arts Council Cultural Recovery Fund and Community Foundation.
