There are a lot of places to get married in and around Newcastle; hotels, country houses, and industrial spaces, but if you're looking for somewhere that is an alternative urban venue that stands for something and gives you real creative freedom, there's genuinely nowhere else in the city quite like Gosforth Civic Theatre (GCT).
We sit just three miles north of Newcastle city centre and are the only public-facing theatre in the UK founded and guided by people with learning disabilities. We’re an arts venue, cafe bar, and events space all in one, and weddings are a key part of what we do.
What makes celebrating here different isn’t just the building itself - it’s the atmosphere, the flexibility, and knowing that your wedding is making an impact.
Social Conscience
We're the only venue of its kind in the UK. Every week, over 100 people take part in our arts, health, and wellbeing programmes. Weddings help make that possible; every booking directly supports the wider work of the organisation.
We aim to reduce social exclusion and division by bringing people together through shared cultural, creative, and community activity. Your wedding becomes part of sustaining that mission long after you've left for your honeymoon.

Professional Music Venue
If music matters to you, this is where things get really exciting.
Because we’re a professional working theatre, we already have a high-quality in-house sound system and professional technicians included with your booking. Our building is designed for live performances.
You can have live music in the theatre, acoustic performances in the foyer, DJs in the studio, or courtyard sets as the evening rolls on. If you’ve spent years building playlists together, you can create your soundtrack for the entire day exactly how you imagined it.
It can move from an emotional ceremony to a full late-night dancefloor atmosphere; the technical side is taken care of.
And because we understand live events, transitions throughout the day are smooth. Lighting changes, speeches, performances, playlists, microphones - everything is handled by people who do this professionally every day.
Bespoke Drinks
Love a particular local beer or have a tipple that became your drink over the years? Want guests arriving to something that feels personal instead of generic prosecco?
We offer bespoke drinks options and bar offers, and we’re happy to talk through ways of including things that matter to you - whether that’s a favourite beer, a specific spirit, or a welcome drink that sets the tone as guests arrive.
Some couples keep things simple. Others create themed menus or build drinks around places they’ve travelled together. It’s about making the bar feel like part of your day.
Lighting
Lighting completely changes how the space feels, and one of the advantages of getting married in a professional arts venue is that we can transform our spaces throughout the day.
During the ceremony, the space can feel warm and intimate. Later in the evening, it can shift into something much more vibrant. If you have a colour scheme, we can set our bars, skylights, and venue lighting to reflect it. Soft ambient tones or bold colours - the building can change with the mood of the day.
It’s one of those things couples don’t always think about immediately, but it makes a huge difference to how the wedding looks in photographs and feels in the rooms themselves.
The same venue can feel entirely different between the afternoon vows and the evening party.
Creative Control
Another aspect couples often appreciate is how much flexibility there is to make the venue their own.
We have three digital screens throughout the building that can be used for welcome messages, order of service details, photo galleries, videos, or table plans. Around the venue, A1 poster frames can display engagement photos, artwork, timelines of your relationship, gig posters, film-inspired designs - whatever reflects you as a couple.
There’s loads of room to personalise your experience and add details that make the day unmistakably yours.
Street Food
Our courtyard opens up the option of bringing in your favourite street food vendors and creating something that has a festival-style feel.
Guests can move freely between spaces and grab food throughout the evening. It’s a popular option for couples who want their wedding to feel sociable and a little less structured than a traditional sit-down meal.
Think tacos, pizza ovens, loaded fries, ice cream, coffee carts - whatever suits your crowd and your personalities.
That said, if you do want a more traditional wedding breakfast or seated meal, we can absolutely do that too. The point is flexibility, and not forcing everyone into the same format.
Accessibility
Accessibility at Gosforth Civic Theatre isn’t an afterthought or a box we’ve ticked. It’s fundamental to how the building was designed.
The entire venue is on one level, with step-free access throughout. Every entrance and exit is wheelchair accessible. We have accessible toilets, Blue Badge parking spaces on site, low-level bars, and baby changing facilities in every toilet.
We’ve also made sensory-aware design choices across the building, including things like paper towels instead of loud hand dryers.
We want everyone attending your wedding to feel comfortable moving through the space, participating fully, and enjoying the day without unnecessary barriers or stress. If you've got guests who sometimes find venues difficult to navigate, this is a building that was genuinely designed with them in mind.
Flexibility
We know that every love story is different, so we don't think one-size-fits-all weddings make much sense.
We start with a base venue hire and build around what you actually want from the day. Some couples choose a full building takeover with live music, multiple spaces, and a huge evening celebration. Others want something smaller, more intimate, and more stripped back.
Both work beautifully here.
